I am currently running 10.3.9 on a 1.67Ghz Powerbook.

As I need to use Java 5.0 I have purchased 10.4. However I am a little concerned that the upgrade may wipe some of my applications stored in /usr/local and environment variables.

The applications in question are JBoss and MySQL. Now I don't know if I should have installed these somewhere else but I would prefer not to have to re-install in another location.

Can anyone tell me which of the install options would leave all my applications including those in /usr/local in tact and will they touch environment variables in $HOME/.bash_profile.

Any help is much appreciated.

As insurance, before doing the upgrade, I would clone your current startup disk to an external hard drive (or to a disk image). Then you can try the install, and if things go horribly wrong, you can restore and be back where you started or try again.

You can use Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to do the clone.

The installation options for OS X 10.4 are discussed in this Apple document.
