Over a network? I want to share a folder that contains a lot of music. It's on an external hd, connected to my airport through a powerbook. I want to make those files available to all computers using the airport network, but it's too big to put in the public folder on the powerbook.
Is there a way to share a folder over the network other than putting it in the public folder?
thanks.

You need to use SharePoints. It's extremely annoying that OSX doesn't offer the flexibility in this area that Windows offers.
HornWare: SharePoints look here. It's free software (well, donation ware actually).

Thanks very much Goldfinger, I'll give it a try. That is a drag that you have to use 3rd party software, I agree.

Yikes. I opened up Sharepoints, but it's pretty advanced stuff (for me, being an ignoramus). Is there a simple way just to share a folder over a network with sharepoints?

I think I have shared folders on my PowerMac using the Windows Sharing option in the "Sharing" folder in the System Preferences. I am not on a network right now, so I could be wrong. From another computer on the network, you should be able to open your computer using he IP address using a format something like this: smba://123.456.789.123, which is SAMBA format. You you might see the computer from the remote computer's Network Neighborhood window.

If you are using iTunes, maybe consider just not turning on music sharing in iTunes. This does not really offer quite the same functionality, but it might let you do what you want much more quickly.

It's actually easier than it looks. All you care about it the "Normal Shares" tab. Ignore the other ones.
- In Sharepoints, enter a Share Name. This is the name the folder will have over the network. It can be the same as the folders name or something else. If you are sharing with a older version of Windows, use an 8 character name without spaces. Win 2k, XP, & Vista, name away. For example, use "iTunes Music"
- Click the Browse button in the Directory field and navigate to the folder you want to share.
- If you are sharing with another Mac, set AppleFileServer (AFS) Sharing to Enabled. If you are shring with a Windows machine set Windows (SMB) Sharing to Enabled. You can set both to Enabled if you want to share with both.
- Click Create New Share. Enter your password when asked.
- There is no step 5.
You might need to restart afterwards, I don't remember, but this should do what you want.
