How to have line in routed to line out by default?

I want to my system (10.4.9) route audio signal coming into the line in jack on my G5 to the line output. It would be great if there was a piece of software that could do this and allow for volume control by the traditional os x method.
I did find one program, LineIn that performs this task, but I have a couple issues with it. For one, it is an app that has to remain open in the background and secondly it doesn't allow for easy volume control - you have to go into system preferences -> sound and manually adjust the volume of the line input.
Anyone know of some other option? A pref pane that allows this functionality would kick ass.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to accomplish with this but have you seen Detour?

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough, here's my exact scenario:
I have an Xbox 360 that I have connected to my computer monitor using a kvm switch so i can go back and forth between it and my G5 PM. I have the line out of my G5 running into my stereo system which only has one auxiliary input.
What I want to do is run the audio output of my xbox 360 into the line in on the G5 and have that routed, within OSX, to the G5's line out.
LineIn, which i mentioned in the original post, does accomplish this but it's a bit cumbersome mainly due to it being an app as opposed to a background service and does not allow for easy volume adjustment.
If there isn't anything that is an improvement on LineIn, I'll keep using it because it does work, but I'd love something better.
edit: btw, yes I've used Detour in the past and it works great for what it is intended for but it doesn't suite my needs in this instance.

Actually, I take that back. SoundSource probably won't solve your problem. This other utility probably won't either, but I thought it might be worth mentioning here: Soundflower.

if you're in 10.4.9 already, you're already in the future, and should be able to figure this out.

you could just move the keys wider apart, or else respond to this post on tuesday, when 10.4.9 comes out, making the original post more accurate...
(truthfully, i have no idea when 10.4.9 comes out)

I'm interested in any solutions to this too. Previously I'd have to start GarageBand to get sound out so that's even worse (I'll try LineIn next).
