In my system.log I have this process that is constantly repeating itself every 5 seconds:

Apart from it using resources on the Mac, just the fact that it keeps trying over and over again, well it's a bit unnerving. Especially when I don't know what it is, and how to stop it.
Restart does not fix it, and quitting the process mDNSResponder itself is probably not a good thing, if at all allowed.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I might be completely wrong, but I think it might have something to do with iTunes library sharing or bonjour.

mDNSResponder is Bonjour (formerly called Rendezvous). It generates very little traffic (well, it generates a fair bit of traffic at system or application startup and then backs off exponentially).

If you have contact sharing turned on in Address Book, or music sharing turned on in iTunes (or have "search for other peoples' music" you will get some additional Bonjour traffic.

But it's really nothing to worry about. The traffic it generates is very minimal. If you knew how chatty TCP/IP was in general you'd know it's maybe 1/10,000 the traffic that goes out. Actually prombably more like 1/10,000,000
