I have a desktop background designed to be displayed on multiple displays, how do I set it? System Preferences is being terribly unhelpful and I can't find anything on google about it.

I don't see what's wrong with that method...unless you have a folder of them and you want them to rotate randomly but in sync. It's not that hard.

It may be not 'hard' but it's definitely a pain compared to just clicking a checkbox that says "stretch to external displays" or something like that.
