I have four hard drives and about eight network shares and I'm the kind of guy that likes a clean desktop. Is there any way to hide certain drive/network icons from desktop?

Finder :: Preferences :: General:: Show these items on the desktop

Uncheck the ones that you don't want

Thanks!

I noticed one of the option under that in the Sidebar was "Computer" which made my Mac Pro appear in the sidebar and clicking it revealed all the drives and network shares. Is there any way to have this object on my desktop?

There doesn't seem to be a way to do create a desktop icon for Computer, but perhaps someone has written a utility that does.
