Just wondering.. coming from a Windows world normally only major releases require a new purchase .. like Windows 95 - 98 - 2000 and so on ... same with applications like 8.x 9.x etc.

Regarding Mac OS X : Do you have to buy 10.5 when you already have 10.4.8 or do you simply online upgrade ? Version number wise it doesn't look like a major release although reading through the Leopard documentation it seems it is .....

You will have to buy.

In recent history, Apple has charged for large-point upgrades (10.1, .2, .3, .4), and will charge for .5 as well. Expect the price to be approximately US$130, if history is any indication.

OS X's major upgrades are the 10.x upgrades, and they are paid upgrades (with the exception of 10.1 which was free).

You have to pay, same as Windows.

OSX:
N.x is paid
N.x.y is free

Windows:
N.x is paid
N.x SPy is free

Win2000 was 5.0, XP is 5.1
Win95 is 4.0, Win98 is 4.10, WinME is 4.90
Service packs are like minor versions, and free.
