your graphics card doesn't support Core Image. only way to fix it is to upgrade.

Hmm, according to everymac.com, your iMac should have a 32 MB GeForce 2MX in it, which should actually be enough for Quartz Extreme.

Does your arrow cursor have a little drop-shadow under it?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

The requirements for Quartz Extreme are not exactly the same as for the ripple effect. Quartz Extreme is pretty much all about VRAM, whereas Core Image is mainly concerned with shaders. I don't believe the GeForce 2 MX is supposed to do the Dashboard ripple (it's definitely not on Apple's list of Core Image-capable cards). Sorry.

Ah, that's right. The requirement for the ripple is CoreImage, not Quartz Extreme. Not sure what I was thinking there.
