I am replacing a PowerMac G-3 Desktop running OS 9.2.2 with a used 20" iMac G-4/1.25. My wife is still using a G-3 desktop and we sometimes transfer documents, etc .from one G-3 to the other via Zip disk or floppy and occasionally by USB Flashdrive. Neither G-3 has the capability to burn CDs. Once the iMac is operational I will no longer be using my G-3.

The iMac came with OS 10.3.5 on it but no OS install disks and without so-called Classic installed. I pretty well know my way around everything from OS 7.5 through 9.2, but OSX is a whole new ball game for me. For various reasons I need to have the capability to work in both OS 9 and OS10 on the iMac.

The previous owner left various bits and pieces of his own stuff on the computer and I would prefer to get rid of all of that and start fresh. So, the question is where do I go from here? I don’t mind buying new OS 10.4 software and installing that as long as I can still use OS-9.

If I buy new OS-10 software from Apple will it include a version of OS-9 that I can install on the iMac?

Also how do I transfer stuff from the G-3 to the iMac? Flash drive? Pay the one local Mac repair shop to do it for me? Wave my hands over it, do a little dance and hope it somehow gets from on computer to the other?

Any help/ advice/ recommendations anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

OS X no longer comes with an OS 9 disc. The G4 originally came with a Hardware Test/Extra Software CD, and that's where you'd install OS 9 from. Alternatively, you can find someone with an OS 9 System Folder on their drive and copy it straight over from the Finder or burn it to disc to place on your G4.
