I just bought Path Finder and there are a few options for default compression format. There is .zip, gz, sitx, & bz2.

I have done all my backup with .zip via Finder so far. I do archive pictures, documents, and 3rd party apps.

I also would like to use Terminal instead of Stuffit.

If I were you I'd compress whatever files I need to compress in each format and see whaich is the best for you. I'd add RAR and 7ZIP to your test.
