I found a ton of wasted disk space today and wanted to share what I learned incase it has happened to others. I have been low on space and finally did some clean up and also purchased an external drive. I am an old UNIX user and do poke around in terminal occasionally. Today I was just creating a backup shell file and happened to look in the /Volumes directory to make sure my target was correct when I spotted some dmg files that were directly in the /Volumes directory. They were not mounted, not links, and they were very old. I did recognize them and can’t explain how they got there. One was an IDVD project and another was a dmg I created with DIsk Utility. After I copied them off (just in case) I deleted them and recovered gigs of space.
I wanted to pass this on because I don’t think you can see files in the /Volumes directory unless you are in terminal and others could have gigs of space just waiting to be reclaimed.

FYI you can see the contents of the /Volumes directory (or just about any hidden directory) in the Finder by typing the path in the Finder's "Go To Folder..." prompt.

You might also want to check out the free tool WhatSize. I looks like a simple column-view file browser, but it lists files and folders by size, shows hidden directories, etc. It's a very simple way to find and recover wasted disk space.
