I would like to back up my home folder to an external HD....what could I do to make a back-up of my home folder?

Drag and drop it to the external.

That's what I did, but the little house icon blew away...and disappeared from my HD side window without being copied to the external HD!

That was an alias.

Open users on hard drive and drag a copy of your user or just copy entire user folder.
