Hey all, I have a G4 cube that im trying to install OSx on to, and i just cant get it to work. If i put the disk into the drive, its seems to be tempermental, sometimes it spits it out, and some times it will take it and let me try to install. On one attempt it had resarted to try and install, and it poped up with a message, saying i could not install OS X on this machine. I have no clue why not, since i have 2 cubes, one is running OS X on it, the other OS 9, which is the one im trying to upgrade.

So i mounted the OS 9 drive via firewire to my Ibook, and tried to run the install that way. I had read a tutorial, saying that if i target mounted the destination drive, i could run the OSX install, and on the restart it would ask which drive i wanted to install to. But as soon as the Ibook begins to shutdown for the install, it freezes. I have no clue why, but i also have trouble acessing the cube drive when its firewire mounted, it would freeze my ibook.

All i can guess is that my OS X disk wont let me install because it came with my Ibook. I know it sounds obvious, but the disk has never told me i cant because of it being a factory supplied disk. It sounded simple enough a G4 Ibook OSX install disk, to work for a G4 Cube. I dont know, if i have to buy another copy of OSX, so be it, but im just curious to your alls thoughts.

Well, you should buy another copy, or a family license, but the disk from your iBook should work - I don't think they are tailored to specific machines. How easy is it to pop out the drives on your cubes and swap them out?

Actually they are, you cannot pop in an iBook install disk on any other Mac. As for the OP, its really easy to install OSX on a cube, no difference then any other Mac.

They started doing that when Panther came out. Pretty annoying.

You need a retail version of the OS.

Ha. I did not know that. Thanks! You can pop an iMac install disc in any other iMac though? It's not model specific? Or is it?

It could work, but it may not. If you don't want to worry about it, only upgrade systems with retail upgrade boxes.
