With my internet connection having been off the rail the last few days hopefully someone can help me isolate some issues. I have an ADSL modem but in the activity monitor i see that the apple modem has been activated which i have never seen before. Upon trying to quit the process in the activity monitor it just keeps showing up.

Any ideas?

Go to System Preferences>Network and Show: Network Port Configurations.

Uncheck the Internal Modem (and any other network types you don't use such as Bluetooth or Firewire). While you are there, you may as well shift either Airport or Built-in Ethernet to the top of the list (by dragging it) depending on which you use as your primary means of connection to make sure the OS scans this first when trying to connect. I think you need to restart to make these changes take.
