i bought a logitech microphone, plugged it into a USB port
the computer seems to recognize it, poking around sys preferences/speech/etc. but unlike OS 9, there is no window to make my own alert recording. IS there a way to do this?
btw, the directions that came w/my logitech microphone ($30!) are kinda old i think, cuz they refer to a step, "click record and create a voice file," which i do NOT see anywhere in the sys preferences
IS there a way to do this w/OS X?
tanks mucho

I don't know how you can do it using Logitech's own software, but you can do it with Sound Studio, found in the /Applications folder.
Once you're finished, save your sound file in the AIFF format (Ex: MySound.aiff). Browse to your home folder (Finder-> Go menu -> Home), then open your Library folder. If there's a folder named "Sounds", drag your file there, if not, create the folder first, then drag the sound file. Finally, open the System Preferences and switch to the Sound panel, then activate the "Sound effects" tab. Your custom sound should be there, so just click on it and it will be your new alert sound!

You can always use GarageBand to record Mic input... and mix a little error music riff.

That's strange, I'm pretty sure it came with my iMac... As ganesha said, you can use GarageBand or you can download a third-party application. As long as it can save in AIFF it should be fine.

Have you tried Quicktime player? I have paid the extra for Quicktime Pro, so this may not be in the standard version.
Mine has a File menu option to record a short New Audio Recording. You'll find it records as a .mov file, but you can then use the Export option in the File menu and choose Sound to AIFF
