I have a G3 iMac for my 3-year-old son to play some games on, like Blues Clues and Dora, etc. He totally hosed the machine by dragging anything and everything into the trash, or other folders, etc. I had to wipe and re-install the OS. I set up an account just for him on the machine with "simple finder" access. The problem now is that each of his game CDs go through a process of installing a few files on the hard drive the first time you run them. Simple finder doesn't allow this process. I tried giving his account full access, starting up the game, installing the files, quitting, and then locking his account back down to simple finder. But when I do that and then try to run the game, I end up back at the prompt telling me that some files need to be installed, which can't be done in that locked-down mode.
Anyone else run into this? Can anything be done?
Also is there a way to just load the games on his machine one time and put icons on the desktop? It's a pain having to keep the CDs handy.

Give him full Finder, but not an administrator account. He should not be able to kill the machine if he isn't an administrator. If he can, there are other problems with your machine.

He might not be able to "kill" it, per se, but he can make things a real mess by dragging things into the trash...

Then just delete that account and create a new one.

oh.....okay, I get it now. That's not TOO much trouble, although it would mean going through another round of the "install these files" process for each of his games -- way less trouble than re-installing the OS, for sure.

Sorry but I laughed when I read your original post.

I setup my nephew's account to use Simple Finder. As for the games, I save the CD as Disc Images using Disk Utility. Fortunately the games they play allow this (not all games do -- some perform a CD check to make sure you have a legit disc). After installing the games, I enable access to the app so they can just click it once to run it.
Has worked for almost 2 years now. :-)
