Well i didnt post this in the applications section because it happens with different applications made by different companies... not just apple, so it must be an OS issue...

I have an intel core 2 duo 20" imac running tiger 10.4.8...

The problem is that sometimes i will click on an application to run it, the icon pops up on the dock, bounces a bit... and the dissappears... sometimes doesnt even bounce once....no matter how many times i try it wont run. The only solution is to log out or restart and come back in and it will run...

one day its ms word another it would be limewire and even some game demo's... none of the actual apple applications have the problem... just applications made by other companies... but different ones? is there something in the settings i have wrong? i have the latest updates for these programs... and when they do run they run perfectly...

Also, sometimes when i turn on my mac in the morning i will load up dashboard with just a couple of small widgets on it... nothing major, then couple hours later (even though i use dashboard frequently during the day) dashboard will have to load up again... or acts very slow... no major applications running and not hogging the processors at all...

then other times i'll do something to a widget and continue... i'll shut down at the end of the day... next day what i did isnt there.... for example the common one is the little sticky note... i would write/delete something... and next day... its like if i didnt do it...

Did you try repairing permissions (from Disk Utility)? If that doesn't work, try rebooting from your Tiger install disk and run disk utility from there (repair disk and repair permissions).

Do you use an old version of the Application Enhancer by Unsanity(for use with ShapeShifter and the like) ?? If you do it might be Rosetta apps trying to launch. Write this in the Terminal if that's the case "sudo killall translated" -without the quotes. That's what I can come up with at this point in time.

In the applications folder, there is an application called Terminal (it might be in a subdir called utils). It is a text interface to the OS. Open it, and you will have a black text window. Type "sudo killall translated" -without the quotes.

You need to enter your admin password - what is the password you set up when you set the machine up?

I had this happen to me recently - it appears that it's to do with Rosetta (ie. PPC applications). You mentioned MS Word and Limewire, both of which are PPC applications, not Intel native, and so must run under Rosetta.

I don't know what the cause of this was for me, but it was solved simply by logging out and back in again.

(havent tried all the other keys on the keyboard such as the function keys due to fear of what i might do but...) i cant actuall type when it asks me for my pass... i can type in the previous part but not here... i dont get it...

Just type your password and hit enter. You won't see anything, but if you type the right one, it will work. If it doesn't work, you can try using Activity Monitor (found in the same place as Terminal) to locate and terminate translated. In either case, make sure to either upgrade Application Enhancer and all its haxies to the latest version, or just uninstall it if it isn't necessary for you. APE is useful, but it brings its own problems. Personally, I stay away. YMMV.

For PPC apps, Rosetta (=translated) launches automatically when you doubleclick them. What you're seeing is that Rosetta has crashed, so you can't use it.

I removed application enhancer and all the rest... i restarted... and everything seems to be working fine... office opens up and so does the rest.. so now time will tell if the problem persists (and the APE's werent the cause) in that case then... if rosetta fails to launch... or has crashed and isnt working as you say, how do i fix that? by doing the "sudo killall translate" thing in terminal?

"sudo killall translated" is the command, yes. Or reboot.

type this in Script Editor in your AppleScript folder in Applications; "do shell script "sudo killall translated" password "admin_pass" with administrator privileges" - without the quotes of course. Replace "admin pass" with your account password - just lose the quotes. Save the whole thing as an Application or script and launch it with QuickSilver f.ex. If you don't lose the "admin pass" entry you will be prompted for a password. I hope it all made sense - If ind it eaiser to launch it through QuickSilver than opening the Terminal app each time. And yes I use a beta version of APE 2.0.2
do shell script "sudo killall translated" password "admin_pass" with administrator privileges
That is how it should look.
