I just came across an old b&w G3 and I was wondering if Mac OS 10.3 will work ok on it.

Eh, it will run OK. I've used 10.3 on a B&W — it's usable, but I wouldn't want to do my photo editing on it. It's a bit slow for some things, but that's because we're talking about a 10-year-old computer with a 300 MHz processor and Rage 128 graphics.

Im just kind of using it to get to get used to Mac. It did come with a Radeon 7000 graphics card if that will help it at all.

Well, like I said, it works OK. That's what we had for the school lab I run until a couple of weeks ago. People wrote papers on them and did minor QuarkXpress and Photoshop work on them and it all worked just fine. 10.3 is probably the best system for that kind of computer, in my opinion.

I agree. I have a 350 MHz B&W over here with the Radeon 7000 and 10.3 is faster than 10.4 on it. Does it come with a stock hard disk?, if so you would like to get a newer speedier one AS LONG AS it is not a first revision B&W G3 which has some issues with the IDE controller. Then just add as much RAM as you can & want and it would be more than adequate to run 10.3.9 <-- tip: download the free update Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 - Mac OS X Updates

Take a look at where the hard disk is installed, revision 2 B&W G3 systems came with a stacked bracket and dual drive cable letting you install an additional hard drive above the original one, while revision 1 B&W G3s came without the stacked bracket.

You can see it here:
xlr8yourmac.com - Photos of new B&W G3 Rage128 and dual Drive IDE bracket and Cable

same here, last picture shows the stacked bracket:
Adding a 2nd IDE hard drive to B&W G3 rev 2 and G4 Mac Systems

You'll find this article useful If your G3 is a revision 1:

Good luck.
