Last night I was running Onyx and I thought the machine had frozen up. I force quit, and then tried to start the ibook up. The mac folder appeared blinking back and forth between it and a question mark. I loaded my OSX disk and tried to run the disk utility and got :
"The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

1 volume filed verification"

The have an ibook 800/g4 running 10.3.9

any ideas to resolve this.

Thanks

What do you mean by "force quit?" Was it a "force quit" the process or "force quite by turning power off?"

When you ran the Disk Utility, did you verify the boot volume or repair it?

If this were to happen to me, I would try repairing the volume (if I hadn't tried already). If that didn't work, I'd repartition, reinstall fresh, and restore from my latest backup.

There may be other solution to try before the drastic, but that would be my path to recovery.

If the repair from Disk Utility doesn't work, DiskWarrior may help recover Volume Header problems.
