I have a big problem with a 15'' Powerbook, Tiger OSX:
When I try to open a powerpoint file, the application crashes and I receive a report in which it states that the fonts are corrupt.
Also, when I try to open Font book application it crashes also. My question is how can I solve this? Is it possible to replace those fonts ? if so, where do I find the fonts on the Tiger installation disc and where should I place them? Can this be done without reinstallation of the OS? I don't understand why font book crashes
10x alot

Hi, how many fonts are you running on your system? Did you install/uninstall any fonts prior to this? Did you play around with moving any fonts, etc?
To try and solve your problem the automated way, see if Font Doctor helps:
Font Doctor X
For general Font management, I use Font Explorer... I've always been dissapointed with OS X's Font Book:
Linotype Font Explorer X
You can manually place the fonts back in the neccessary folders, (don't do this without thorough research/advice first though!) but see if Font Doctor sorts out your problem first... hope that kind of helps! (Got to get back to work!)

Hello, thanks for your help. I am running the usual fonts that came with the mac, actually I never opened (before having this problem) font book. I use Office 2004 with everything that came with it, nothing more, no 3-rd party software add-ons or something else.
I have tried font doctor and it "unexpectedly quit" just like font book. I am pretty desperate about this. It seems that there is no other solution, but to reinstall the OS.
What do you think is causing this crashes of font book and font doctor? excel and all the other non office applications seem to be working fine. Entourage crashes also, I think its the same problem, because I was able to copy my identity on another mac to be able to work today( I depend very much on my e-mails and my Office).

I don't think I will be using this, I don't have so much experience concerning this particular feature which is font management. All I know is that I need an application like font book to check my fonts or to install new ones, though I never used it.

Artanis: Have you installed the updates to MS Office? Latest one is 11.3.4 - but make sure you read the fine print about installation: do this one first, then that one, etc. And then repair disk permissions when finished... No guarantee, of course, but I think I remember reading something about the PPT crash being fixed - couldn't find the reference now, of course.

Try logging out then logging back in while holding down the shift key - this will clear various system caches and disable third party extensions to the system along with non-system fonts. If you can launch Powerpoint then, it indicates that your system fonts are fine and that the culprit is a third party font, probably one of the fonts installed by Office itself when you first run it. If you look in the /Applications/MS Office 2004/Office/Fonts folder, you will see all the fonts it does install. Easiest thing to do would be to copy/paste all of these into your /Library/Fonts folder to overwrite the ones currently installed (therefore replacing any that have become corrupt). Log back out and back in again (this time without the shift key held down) and see if you can run Office and Font Book, etc.
