Just bought a used MAC G3 with OSX 10.1 and am looking for a FREE PC Emulator so I can run some windows Applications on it.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

You are out of luck. While you may have some luck with DarWine, it's a pain in the ass. What specifically do you want to run?

Yep, out of luck. Running any Windows emulator on a G3 is going to be a pain. Most emulators require a 1 GHz or better G4.

Figure out what it is you really need, and we can help you find a replacement, or else get an Intel Mac or a cheap PC.

This wont help you find an emulator, but I'd recommend upgrading that machine to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), if you get the opportunity.

The emulator is so I can play poker. Pokerstars does not have a mac version

I am such a noob, I can't even get a DVD to play. This is my first MAC. I popped the DVD in and I see a folder which a bunch of vob files. I even downloaded the latest Windows Media Player.

Any tips how to get a DVD movie to play?

Yes - upgrade that machine to anything 10.3 or higher.

That is absolutely imperative and will answer 95% of any remaining questions.

Don't bother with it before you do that.

You know, really, while I agree that you need to upgrade to Tiger, I am skeptical that investing in this machine is going to make you happy. It is virtually obsolete, and in the long run, you'll be happier buying a more recent machine, which has Tiger on it anyway.

It's not free, but earlier versions of Virtual PC will run windows on your G3. I remember doing it myself. On your computer I wouldn't really use anything above Win98 as it might be quite slow.

VPC will be much faster than the crappy free ones that are out there.

would you believe I paid $20 for it ? Bought it because its faster than my moms old computer. At least she can browse the internet on this thing.

So what version of OSX do I need to get for this G3? I understand todays Macs are Inte based. And this thing is PPC or whatever

I'd recommend 10.3 as well. you can get it at a discount since it's no longer the newest version, and it'll take up less drive space & use/need less RAM. It is quite an improvement over 10.1, which was barely usable. I think you'll need a minimum of 256 mb of RAM for 10.3.

Even if there was an emulator that ran on your Mac, it'd be ludicrously slow. I had VirtualPC running on my 1GHz G4 Sawtooth and it was almost unusable. Nice price on the Mac though

Here's a site selling it for $60.00. It comes on 3 CDs.

OS X 10.1 should play your DVD if your Mac has a DVD player. The DVD player application should be in your Applications folder, and is called "DVD Player".
