Sometimes when I'm downloading a .DMG file instead of the standard blank page icon for the partial DMG (dmg.part) OS X displays an old excel icon (like, windows 95 old). any ideas about what's going?

P.S.- I've had two Macs, and both have done this.

I assume you're referring to Safari's download icon. I have not seen that occur on any of the Macs I use. You may want to clean the icon cache with Cocktail.

Both of my Macs exibit this behaviour too, but it is pretty random and doesn't occur very often.

Not only does it effect paritally downloaded disc images but other icons as well. It doesn't really bother me, I just change the default program back to whatever should be opening the files (disk utility) and that fixes it.

Perhaps we should point the finger at Microsoft for this strange behaviour?

It looks like it has to do with what version (and what settings) the person who sent the email was using-and what email client too. I've seen this on Windows too, and that's the best explanation I've come up with.

Well, hate to shoot you guys down, but this is actually happening in Firefox, and its not through emails, its when downloading .DMGs from an actual website (as in, its a program designed for mac from a website with mac-exclusive .DMGs).

Rebuild the Launch Services Database using the aforementioned Cocktail software.

The icon is part of the file you downloaded in most cases. Once you've extracted it, your Mac may show a different icon.

As ricky939 says, you can rebuild your Launch Services...but you still may get old icons that are embedded in the file or files you downloaded.

Actually in most cases, the icon is _not_ part of the file downloaded (for .jpg, .bin, .sit, .dmg, etc.) as all of these files lack the resource fork necessary to store icons and other file metadata. In these cases it is MIME type and creator code that is important: .part is apparently associated with Excel on your machine.
