I have a Powerbook I purchased new from the Apple store 3-4 years ago that is in need of a fresh install of OS X. I found my Powerbook install disc w/ 10.2, but was hoping to stick to 10.4. Unfortunately, I can not find the install discs for 10.4 -- I do have a legal copy somewhere...just not sure where at the moment. So is it possible to somehow install 10.4 off of my newer Mac Mini install disc?
Just my $.02 :-)

It could work, as long as you're not talking about a Mactel mini, but it may also refuse to run.

Yeah, it's refusing to run. If I start from the Mac Mini CD, it will load but then present an error to the effect of not being able to install the software to my Powerbook. I know it's not an issue of 10.4 -- 10.4 is currently installed, since I upgraded when I purchased my copy a while back. There must be something in the installer preventing things from installing smoothly. So is there a work around?

you could start the powerbook in target disk mode and install to it using the mini to boot the OS X install DVD

Apple has keyed the disks so that you cannot use a different model's install disk, basically they're attempting to thwart piracy, that is people not wanting to buy 10.4 since they have an install disk from another computer.

Wouldn't 10.4 be included in the price of the machine? In which case I technically own a legal copy and should be able to do w/ it as I please? I don't know that I agree that it's piracy, but I guess that won't help me much know.

You could put your powerbook into FW target disk mode and clone your mini's boot drive to there.

Huh? You have a Powerbook that came with 10.2 that price was included in the purchase price of laptop and not 10.4. You (we all) don't have the right to install a newer version of OSX onto a machine w/o paying for the license.

I wasn't referring to 10.2 and the Powerbook. But when I purchased my Mac Mini w/ 10.4, I purchased a licensed copy. So shouldn't I be able to take that copy and install it on my Powerbook? It doesn't matter at this point.

Not if you're still using it on the mini. There probably is something in the EULA that prohibits you from using a license obtained from buying a Mac and transferring it to another Mac, hence the hardware locking on the CDs/DVDs now.

If you've legally bought a copy, there's no reason you couldn't download Tiger over BitTorrent and burn it to a DVD or two.
