I've been going through my computers folders to delete crap left behind by shareware programs. Everything is good except I've found a couple of files I can't delete. I can see those files, they're help files, but can't delete them because Finder and Terminal tells me they don't exist.

How do I shred these files?

If Finder and Terminal "tells" you they don't exist, then
how exactly are you seeing them? (I'm just saying that
you could have explained events a bit clearer perhaps).

Anyway... boot off your OSX CD and repair that volume,
or go into SingleUser mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy

It sounds like there may be some directory damage.
