I'm not talking about the color labels. I am sick of blue folders, and want graphite-colored folders to go with my graphite-themed desktop preference settings.
Is it possible?

Not natively as an option of OS X. But, you can use third-party software to achieve it.
Application: [CandyBar]
Icons: [The Icon Factory]
Good luck,

Aqua Candy Revolution I believe has a graphite set, here : McDo DESIGN
also I know that AquaNeue by Louie Mantia has a graphite set- they look more like the default folders than Aqua Candy Revolution, here: Louie Mantia
You will need CandyBar and maybe Pixadex to extract and view these icons. Good luck.
you may also want to look here: MacThemes Forums :: View Forum - Releases & Updates - select the Cats thread by susumu. It's at the top.

Yup CandyBar is the way to go, and I think some of the best folder/disk
icons are made by Laurent Baumann (with a little help from Apple ):

I especially like the "Neige" set.
[but yeah, that McDo stuff looks real purdy too]

http://www.yellowmug.com/folderbrander/ also lets you change the color of the folders. I think it gives you 8 colors to choose from.
(I emailed this company asking if they chould make folderbrander have the ability to change the color of the icons to any color I choose. They said it was a good idea and they'd look into it).
I miss the ability to just shade the icons like you could in OS 9. Why did Apple remove that feature???

Maybe they'll bring it back in 10.5?

These are all incredible, however I like the way OS X looks now.

One explanation that I can think of - by colouring the icon, as well as changing just plain folders, you also tint graphical icons as well when they are labelled and that interferes with the look of the icon. By changing the colour of the name, the graphics themselves are left "pure" and as the developer intended them to look.
