*I have an external firewire drive.
*I installed Tiger on it from my MDD.
*The combo updater would not install.
*The external drive does have a bootable version of Tiger (I was able to start up from the external drive on my MDD)
*I plugged this external drive into my B&W G3 (about 700 MB ram) but did the machine did not start-up from the drive.
*I then took the drive from the external case and put it in the G3 as the only drive and tried to boot. No dice

Any reason why this did not work and what will work?

A B&W G3 won't boot from firewire. When you put the drive in the G3 did you set the pins to "master?" (most drives these days have a pin diagram printed somewhere on them)

Ah, good point. I am used to ignoring those pins. I'll take a look. Thanks for the tip.
