The other day my Mac had a black screen and the power was on. I hit the space bar thinking maybe the Mac was asleep. Then I tried the power button. No luck. I ended up having to manually shutdown my Mac using the power button. It's working fine now. Why did this happen?

Thanks,
Mason

Display is off, but machine is on. Not supposed to happen, but it does on occasion (I have it a lot when trying to reboot from Boot Camp on my MBP).

What machine? What circumstances prior to the black screen? There are a variety of possible workarounds.

I was actually thinking of using the control-eject button then hitting "s" when it occurred on one of our MBP's. Instead I just manually shut it off. Thanks for your help.

Sometimes a panic occurs in sleep - that could have been what happened.
