I periodically check the invisible files to see what's there. I found the following 2 files that I cannot figure out what they are.

1. .plugin141_01.trace
2. .spumux - this is a folder full of fonts, about 25MB worth

Anything with the word 'trace' in it worries me.

Can anyone tell me what these are and if I need them or not?

Not unless you tell us where they are located. However, I would suspect that they are generated by an app or apps that you have used and are nothing to worry about.

Edit: Try opening them in e.g. TextEdit to see if they contain any text that would help you identify their source. You can force TextEdit to open the files by command-option drag/dropping them to the TextEdit icon (i.e. in your Dock or Apps folder).

It's from the Java plug-in.

2. spumux - Google Search
Looks like the subtitling font cache of a DVD authoring software.
