ok...i just noticed this today...when i try to download something (default to desktop), or even like drag a picture to my desktop for quick use, it does NOT show up on my actual desktop. the only way i can see it is by viewing my desktop in Finder.

I don't think I changed any preferences...what the heck happened? I do have TinkerTool, but I don't remember doing anything with it, and I don't see a setting to do anything like this anyway. I did install the new security update today and restarted, but it was happening before that (and still is).

i don't see any option for this in tinkertool, system prefs, or finder prefs. also, control-click on the desktop, which usually brings up view options or whatever, doesn't do anything. and if i choose in finder prefs to have the hard disk show on the desktop (as well as a cd that is in my drive now), nothing happens...

how do i make things show up on my desktop again??

seriously, I don't even know why I post here anymore (gah!). BUT if anyone else has this problem, this solved my problem....try this:

go into users/yourname/library/preferences and move
/Users/Your short name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
to your desktop (or in my case, desktop folder in finder, since getting to the desktop was the whole original problem). Then restart--OSX will re-create the file for you, and whatever whas on your desktop should now show up. The only preferences I had to reset after doing this were the small icon and icon font size I had set for the desktop. Now I only wish I knew how that file got corrupted somehow...

Deleting the plist of any app gone screwy should be your first move, it remedies a lot of odd quirks, because the preference files can often become corrupted.

Pretty much. OK, so there is always a reason, but not an obvious one.
