I work in an office of primarily Windows XP machines. We do have one Novell server but when on Windows XP I would just mount it as a normal Windows network drive. I've been able to connect to my own laptop's shared folders via the Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server but I have a few issues.

1. Can I set OS X to auto-mount Windows drives?
2. Can I mount the volume itself instead of one of the folders? This way I can see all the folders of that machine.
3. Why can't I connect to the Novell server at all? In windows, I can mount it as normal and use my own login/pass. When I try to connect in OS X with smb://server_name it won't let me authenticate. Is there another protocol I need to use instead of smb?

1) Yes. Mount it normally, go to your account in system preferences, select login items, and drag the share from the desktop (or the finder) into that box. It will automatically log in when you log in.

2) It depends on the export. But sure, you can mount something like smb://servername/sharename

3) What protocol is the Novell using for export? It needs to be exported as SMB/CIFS. If it's using a proprietary (old) Novell protocol, Windows has support for it -- Mac OS X does not. OS X supports AFP, SMB/CIFS, NFS, FTP, DAV, HTTP, HTTP/S. Have the Novell export as one of those instead of one of their crappy proprietary protocols (Banyan?).

It also supports SSH/SFTP, not that this is likely terribly helpful info..
