Either clone your internal drive to the external one (using CarbonCopyCloner), or if you want just the OS, atttach the drive and use the original OS DVD to install the OS on it.

Either install OS X from the installer DVD directly onto the external disk or clone your existing installation.

Cloning made easy:
• /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility > click on the 'Restore' tab
• Drag your OS X volume onto 'Source', drag your external volume onto 'Destination'
• Hit the 'Restore' buttondi

Hi ncmason,
Make sure your your external HD has FireWire 400 or 800. You will not be able to boot from a USB only external HD.

Intel Macs can boot from USB HDDs. Of course the disk has to be GPT partitioned but that applies to FW or internal HDs as well.

I took your suggestion and used CCC and it is now a bootable drive! Thanks so much.
