Basically, the entire OS X restarted itself and removed a bunch of programs and stuff from my computer. Some of the effects have been:

1. Movies, pictures, and documents are completely gone from Finder.

2. When I go to VLC's "Most Recently Played", I can play the files just fine, although I can't find them in the Finder.

3. Wallpaper reset along with theme.

4. FireFox reset itself and I lost all bookmarks and themes and add-ons.

5. Adium and MSN have restarted and I don't have accounts saved anymore.

6. Although I can't find any files, Finder tells me I still have only 4GB remaining on the computer.

Any solutions? Or am I screwed? I tried restarting the computer, but that didn't work.

Thanks.

It's a long shot, but try trashing your finder prefs and restarting...

(Copy the following file to your desktop or somewhere else, OS X will re-create it on the restart.)

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Thanks for the response.

I copied that file to the desktop and then deleted it from the Preferences folder. I restarted the Finder, but nothing worked.

Do you have any information as to how I can get back all my settings like FireFox, MSN, GUI Customization, etc?

Is it possible that you have accidentally created a new account? Go up to the Apple icon, down to System Preferences --> Accounts. Anything new there?

That's not something OS X does. There has to be some kind of explanation, such as a new account being created as Sherman suggested.

Nope. The only account on the computer is the one I created (Admin).

OK, look into the Users folder.
Your Home directory should be there with a cute little house icon.
What else is in there?

In the Users folder, there are three directories:

Home (this allows me to get to the missing files (movies, pictures, etc.)
Shared (this has a bunch of misc. files from various games)
Abhiram (this has it's own set of movies, music, files, pictures, etc. where I cannot find my files)

You got logged in as a different user. Click on the Apple Menu, choose Log out and then select your original user from the list.

I tried that and there was only one user that I got log into and that was the one I always log into.

EDIT: The problems were still there, though.

Did you change the name of your home folder?

Well, in the users folder I have a folder called "Home" and that has all my stuff in it. The other one, "Abhiram" has the home icon as well, but it doesn't have any of my stuff.

The Users folder should be named after the respective users. What is the name of your original user? Abhiram? It sounds like your home folder got renamed and then when you restarted a new default home folder was created because the original was missing. I don't know how that could have happened, though.

Your home folder isn't called "Home", it carries your short user name. It looks like you messed up something there.

Try creating a new admin user. Log in to that account. Copy over your stuff.

Ok. I'm going to delete the new Abhiram folder and rename Home to Abhiram. I'll post back.

Thanks a lot for the help, guys!

Apologies for the double post, but I deleted the new folder and renamed the Home folder to Abhiram. It worked.
