So I recently bought backyard baseball 2003 and the requirment is mac 8.1 or later. Apparently this wont work on osx, it says "can not be opened because it isnt supported on this system" or something like that. Anyone know how to remedy this problem or is it impossible?

If you have a PowerPC Mac, you can install Classic and try it. If that doesn't work or you have an Intel Mac you'll have to get an older Mac that will run 8.1 or later.

If he's getting the message saying it's unsupported, he has an Intel Mac methinks, and therefore can't run it.

There are emulators for OS 8.1 that run under Windows. If you have an Intel Mac, boot into Windows and run the emulator, or boot through Parallels ... run an emulator through and emulator.

You may wish to try the SheepShaver emulator, compiled for OS X-INTEL.

It runs Mac OS 7.5.2 thru Mac OS 9.0.4. The only catch is that you need to be able to extract a ROM image to make any use of it; for this, I cannot help you for legal reasons. There are two kinds of roms you can use, however: 1) one from a real Power Mac (pre-G3)......... or.......... 2) extracted from one of Apple's software updates.

Backyard Baseball is not worth the trouble at all.

It still would be interesting to see the Mac development community to put together an Intel-based Classic emulator. Where there's an application or game that's no longer supported, there will always be a nostalgic user yearning to use it once more.

©öñFü$íóÑ leads you in the right direction, SheepShaver is that emulator and they have the right ROM images to make even System 7 programs work.

I think that that message shows up if you have a PPC mac without Classic installed.

No, that message says that Classic couldn't find a system folder to boot from.
