As the title says, I can't see other computers connected to the same network my MacBook is connected. My friends MacBook can see mine, but I cannot see hers, nor others. We have the same Services option selected... What could it be?

Do you have personal file sharing enabled and your firewall ports opened to allow this on those Mac that you can't see on network?

Do you have a firewall on? If so, you'll need to open the PFS ports...

If I have Personal File Sharing enabled, the ports open automatically.

And you do understand that PFS has to be on and the port has to be opened on the remote machine, right?

Guys, the issue is that he cannot see other machines, surely they should show up without personal file sharing on, right?

The computers are all on the same IP subnet, right (e.g. computer 1 is on 192.168.0.10, computer 2 is on 192.168.0.15 and computer 3 is on 192.168.0.20)?

No, they won't show up at all unless they have file sharing enabled. It's not like Windows where every computer shows up.

They don't need to be on the same subnet. They just need to be on the same physical network segment.

You do not need to open the ports for AFP on your Mac to see other Macs with AFP enabled on the network.

If they have file sharing enabled, which it sounds like they do from what you said, then you can try rebooting your Mac or the friend's Mac. I've seen this problem many times before. The problem could either be with your Mac not properly detecting other Macs or it could be the other Mac isn't properly broadcasting itself to the network.

We have a MacBook that doesn't broadcast until you open the Sharing pane of System Preferences. AFP is always on, but it doesn't announce until you open the pane. It sees others fine, though.
