anytime i click on anything o the net or first open a window i get the pinwheel of death.
it does not matter what browser, time of day does not matter, and i have cleared cookies cache, and used nearly every utility know to man.
Basically the browser freezes during this time and i cannot do anything to it.
this situation has progressivly gotten worse and i am really at a loss as to what the problem is.
any thoughts, directions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Create a new user. If the problem exists in the new user's account, the problem is systemwide. If the new account is fine, start deleting related preferences in your home folder.

Does the problem exist with different types of internet connection? Ethernet vs wireless, etc?

Do all of your other programs behave normally?

Did you put those 2GB of RAM in yourself? Try it with just one or the other of the RAM sticks to see if one of them is bad.

new user account does not have the same results.
i have removed the preferences for safari and it appears to be doing the same thing.
i cannot find the preferences for Firefox, but after a full reinstall it is still doing the same thing...

i have not tried a different connection type, but i will.
the ram is factory.
for the most part other programs react normally. i sometimes get the pinwheel with other things.

Do you have any Input Managers or system hacks installed in your user account?

Look in ~/Library/Input Managers (or the same location in /Library) to see if you have anything installed in there, and do you have any e.g. haxies such as Windowshade X etc installed?

Agree on the culprit. SafariEnhancer, PithHelmet, WindowShade, ShapeShifter, FruitMenu, any Unsanity APE etc. Any of those installed?

I remember similar results with an outdated version of PithHelmet.

hmmm...
first thank you all for your help.
how would the input managers in theory affect the internet?
does anyone know where the preference file for firefox resides?
this issue is such a hassle.

I had a similar issue with a client's computer. I opened up console and found that every time a link was clicked in Safari, Macromedia's plugin was going nuts. So, I reinstalled Macromedia Flash, and the problem disappeared. You might give it a whirl.

I'm guessing it has to do with the factory version of Flash being run under Rosetta whereas the new one is probably a Universal Binary.

input managers or haxies might not be "affecting the internet" but what they could be doing is interfering with the display of the window(s).

Empty cache and clean out your history can also do wonders. And edit down autofill form as well. Repair permissions too.

Console is a program built into your Mac. You can find it under Applications > Utilities. Run it just before clicking on a Safari link, and it will give a real time system status update, letting you know of any errors.

If this seems to be mostly related to browsers, then maybe it's the DNS resolver or some other network service that's making the system choke.

It wouldn't be the first time my Mac has choked because some network connection or other is misbehaving/disappeared. :-\

Did you try opening the Console to see what the system says the problem is? And did you try reinstalling Macromedia Flash?
