I still have many files on my vintage Powerbook 5300c.

They are in Final Draft 4.1 (the more important ones), and Microsoft word 4.

Especially these Final Draft files are thousands of pages... If I only retyped the most important ones, I get the Vertigo..

Now I wonder if I could get these across to my iMac G5 2.1 Ghz running 10.4.9...?

The old laptop is running OS 7.6. Yes, no error, 7.6.

(It is actually still running flawlessly, prints to the laser printer)

I could buy an usb floppy drive, but could my iMac at all deciper this old computer lingo? Must feel to him like Shakespearean English.

That is one of the beauties of the Mac. Word 4 files will open in Office 2004 no problem. Have you updated Final Draft? It should have no problem opening the older files. I don't know if your System 7 compatible version will run in Classic on the iMac. It won't hurt your new iMac's feelings at all. Old friends and all...!

eBay: Asante AsanteTalk MAC Ethernet to Localtalk bridge NIB (item 260117050746 end time May-20-07 21:46:51 PDT)

This would let you network it if you like, otherwise floppies would work fine I'm sure. Word should convert the old v4 files, but I don't know about the Final Draft 4.1 files...

Actually, I'm running Final Draft 6 (heard too many bad things about version 7 being buggy as hell).

I don't have classic on my iMac. Would I need to install it in order to get my files from the old powerbook?

And how do you propose doing it? Per floppy, or should I get an apple-usb connector (if that exists at all)?

Thanks.

I am using a Hewlett-Packard Jet-Direct 300x for connecting to my Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 6MP.

How would I use this for networking?

So I need to install OS 9, do I? (It's not on my mac, but I could get it from the disc).

Yes, you will need to install System 9, it should be on your original Installation CD.

Probably not if Final Draft 6 is already running on your Mac...

Ask around if an acquaintance has a USB floppy drive - any drive should work fine - to transfer your data over with. Final Draft 6 *should* open them just fine.

If you have a Mac that still understands SCSI, you could put the 5300 in SCSI target disc mode and get the files off that way.

You'll need one of the old-style laptop SCSI adaptors, like this:

eBay: HDi SCSI Dock adapter for Mac and PC or Laptops (item 8831443292 end time Jun-14-07 09:35:23 PDT)

as well as a SCSI cable, of course. It's much cheaper than buying a Localtalk Bridge, unless you don't have another computer with SCSI lying around....

Why would that be one of the beauties of the Mac? Would Word 4 files fail to open in Office 2007 on Windows or something?

At any rate, it seems like this would be more to the credit of the Word 2004 app than the Mac OS itself.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
