I'm having real trouble backing up to the shared drive (on my Airport Extreme network) - I set up an alias on the laptop, for instance, to a backup folder on the networked drive; it all works fine for a couple of times, but then it fails and proceeds to cause problems with the the application, or just default to the desktop of the laptop.

The problem is easily diagnosed, even though the drive appears to be the same name on the desktop, the system actually renames (randomly?) eg. you may have called your drive "example" but the system eventually refers to it as example-1, or example-2 etc... Thereby breaking the alias.

Any suggestions?

What application are you using? I strongly recommend SuperDuper...
