I've got some folders I added to that lefthand bar in the Finder that lists mounted volumes, the photos/music/videos/documents folders, applications folder, etc. The folders I add have custom icons (including the Utilities folder, which has a custom icon by default). Sometimes, the icons show up, but sometimes they randomly blank out to look like generic folders - which makes 'em a little hard to quickly identify.

Any idea on how I can make this stop happening? Rebooting and/or restarting the Finder doesn't always fix it.

If you changed the original folder icons at the source, would they be more likely to stay, rather than changing the icons at the sidebar?

I am doing that. The folder icon in Finder has my custom icon. Then I drag that icon over to the sidebar, and the icon disappears.
