Hi forum,
My dad just bought a used iMac off of ebay and the seller did a completely new reload of OSX. However he failed to include the master password for the original account, and to make things better, he doesn't remember what he used. So for some reason even after the reload of OSX we're still limited to what we can load onto the imac. If someone could point me to the thread about reseting that, or offer some key combination when starting up, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
jmwmnl

If you have the original restore disks, simply do another format and install of OS X. You should then be given the option to specify a new administration password - problem solved. If you have important information already on there that you have no means of backing up, do an archive and install.
Good luck,

If the original owner just reinstalled the OS without reformatting the drive, that person's user accounts would still be on there and it would require a password to get into them. If he did the right thing and reformatted, you wouldn't have that issue. If the original owner didn't provide system CDs, there are various ways to reset the password or to have the system create a new administrator account for you.

If you have an OS X install disc, restart and boot up off the CD (hold down C during startup). ONce the OSX installer starts up, check the menus for an option to reset Admin password. Do that, and you're set.
The best option though is to do a complete format yourself. He should have supplied you with an OSX DVD or with the iMac's restore CDs. Just use those. If he didn't do that, and the first option didn't work, you'd have to purchase a copy of OS X. In the US you can get them from CompUSA. IN Canada most electronics stores sell Apple computers now, so they're everywhere.
Good luck!
