Hi All,

I got a great deal on a headless (tower only) dual 2.0 G5 w/ 2x SATA HDDs, 128MB ATi (woo. ) and a bunch of RAM - for $300 . I'd like to use it as a kind of workhorse computer for a while and take the load off my 3yr old PBG4 (CPU intensive tasks, downloading, storage, etc).

The person who sold it to me left all their stuff on the drives (including user files, login, pword, etc. ), and since I don't have a spare monitor (just me and my PBook) I can only connect to the G5 via FW800 in target disk mode.

That would be fine if I just wanted to get stuff off the drives (which I don't), but I'd like to hook the G5 up to my router and run it off the network or even just hook up to it directly on FW or Ethernet and use my PB as the 'monitor' for the G5.

Does anyone know of a quick way I can do this, or if there is software I can install onto each machine (that doesn't require a password on the client G5) that will allow me to accomplish this? I'm not against reformatting the G5 if it'll facilitate this process.

Free or opensource software would be preferred, but if I can't avoid it I can shell out for some hardworking developer.

Appreciate your input, thanks!

vnc (get chickenofthevnc) is a freeware screenshareing app, it will let you control the machine over the network as if you were sitting right in front of it.

you can upgrade the system or install software using target disk mode to get it running, adjust the network settings, turn on the servers, etc.

turn on file sharing and you're all set.
you can also log in with ssh using the terminal and use command line apps like wget to download files straight to the server.

I'm doing this with an old B&W g3 that has no video card and it works fine.
You can take the dude out of So Cal, but you can't take the dude outta the dude, dude!

great! i'll definitely check that out, hopefully that will work. will i be able to turn on filesharing using target disk mode, or do i have to have local access of the computer for that? i wasn't able to figure out how to change system prefs on the PMG5 through the PBG4. any suggestions?

Use VNC, and TDM basically turns your Mac into a giant external hard drive, so you can't change any prefs with that.
Signature depreciated.

so ill basically have to reformat the drive and create a new account in order to get the admin privilege i need to run a VNC client and change network settings, is what it sounds like. i'll definitely go with VNC though, it seems there is a lot of software for that out there.

thanks for the responses!
