I recently had occasion to re-install the OS onto my PBG4. When I bought the machine, the store gave me OSX Tiger with it (it had 10.3 on it). I guess this was around the time that Tiger was released. Since then I have moved and lost the Tiger DVD(s).
So I called up Apple and asked them for a replacement. After they verified the serial number of the machine, they were happy to sell me a replacement DVD for $16. The AppleCare person noted there was more than one DVD available but assured me that I would only need the single DVD that she was sending. I was fine with this as I did not care about the adjunt apps (iLife).
However, after installing the first disk, the machine re-booted and prompted for the second disk. There is no way to cancel this - The finder is not running at this point, only the installer.
So I attached the machine to my Mac Pro in TD mode so that I could sniff around on it and try to bypass this. According to what I understand, an installer boot is invoked when the /etc/rc.cdrom and /System/Installation elements exist on the disk. Neither of these exist on my system.
Just for grins I renamed the Installer app and booted the machine and it came up in some crippled mode with the root user. So I renamed it back and now I am back where I started.
Can anyone tell me how to bypass this second disk installation? I am a devloper and quite comfortable with the BASH shell...

Just customize the install and don't choose items that are on the 2nd DVD, i.e. iLife, printer drivers, etc.

Cant do that on the 1st DVD. THe options are Install OSX+iLife or just install iLife. Had to pick the former.

Yes you can. When you're booted from the Install DVD (Disc 1), you can customize what you want installed. Just click the Customize button in the OS X Installer.

OK, if I boot from the DVD now and let the installer run - Is it going to re-install the OS as well? My previous install retained all of the existing apps etc. on the machine.

Choose Archive and Install, this will preserve everything and do a clean install of your new cat

OK I went in and did custom and unchecked everything that it would let me uncheck. Same deal...

So I am guessing there is no bypass for this?

Not if you truly unchecked everything. However, I've never seen a restore set require the second disc when everything is unchecked. Your best bet is to call Apple and ask for a proper Tiger DVD, not half of a restore disc set.
I'm guessing you're not a Mac developer since you seem pretty unfamiliar with the installation process, otherwise with a Select or higher ADC membership you could download a standard TIger DVD image and burn it yourself.
