Hello,

I have a system here running Panther 10.3.7.

I need to transfer data over (via network) to a Windows box.

What applications and methods do you recommend to make this happen? Can I install veritas on the windows box and use something else on the mac to successfully implement the transfer? The mac has retrospect installed.

What are your opinions?

Thanks

Enable Windows file sharing on the Mac, specifically share a folder on the PC, then use "Connect To Server" to connect to the shared folder on the Windows machine. You do NOT need anything that didn't come with your Mac to share files back and forth with your PC.

Thanks

Whats off is that the article is a bit off. Under Services, it doesn't give me an option for Windows Sharing. How do I specify which folders I want to share?

I also noticed this:

When copying files to a Windows computer, you must use Windows-legal names. If a file name contains certain characters, the file won't copy.

Anyone know what the windows-legal names are?

ghporter. Doesn't the Windows File Sharing option allow a Windows machine to see/access the Mac on the network? If it is only Mac > PC copying then Windows File Sharing turned on is unnecessary. Correct?

ddzc. The Windows File Sharing ghporter is talking about is on your Mac under Sharing (System Preferences).
On your PC
1. Start > run > cmd.
2. ipconfig [enter]
3. write down your IP Address
4. Use Explorer to browse to a folder you would like to share.
5. Right click the folder and choose properties.
6. Go to the sharing tab.
7. Enable sharing for the folder and give it a name.

On your Mac
1. With Finder as your current application press command-K (Go > Connect to Server)
2. Type in your PC's IP Address
3. If it asks for a username then put in the username and password you have for your PC's username.

Now you should see a window on your Mac which is the PC's shared folder. You can now drag across your files.
I apologize if I missed a step or two. I'm not at home right now.

As for Windows legal file names. You can't use |\?*<":>+[]/

Thanks a lot

I actually got it going. I had an issue though.

I trasnferred some files from the mac to the pc. I then transferred those files from the pc back to the mac and the files we're all corrupted. All of the quark files had the extensions changed to text files and was corrupted.

Any ideas on how this occured?

I believe appletalk may work a bit better.

The problem is that I cannot connect to the windows machine with it. Everytime I try to connect to the server it fails stating incorrect username and password. The problem is that it never prompted me for the credentials. It seems as though a password is saved somewhere from a previous connection maybe from someone else perhaps, how can I clear it?
How can I connect via appleta;k and have it request for the proper credentials. I have appletalk enabled on the ethernet adapters.

Thanks again
