I am trying to access a windows XP file share via. my Powerbook w/ Tiger. It used to be possible to do so by pushing cmd-k and putting in smb;//server etc.. With tiger neither smb, cifs, nor cmbclient (in the command line) works. In fact I have not found one way to access a windows file share (vital for me). I have tried setting my workgroup name in Directory Access, but the network browser still can't find the original object. I've googled for a few days on this, and am thinking I shouldn't have "upgraded".

Here is the console log if I try cifs://, then smb://, then cifs://, then smb://

Is the machine responding on the default SMB port (139, I believe)?

Can you do a:

telnet machineIP 139 ?

Is the search function broken on this forum? boo.

Anyway: Telnet does not connect--but I am fairly certain that is normal. Port 139 is open on a port scan, and I have connected to this exact same share hours before the upgrade. This has to be a local problem.

telnet to 139 should work if the port is actually open, so that is not normal. If you can't connect to this port over telnet, it is inaccessible outside of the machine. Can you telnet to port 139 from the machine? (I'm sure sure if Windows telnet allows you to specify a port to use, so this may be a difficult test to conduct).

At any rate, the first place I always look is whether the server is actually responding on teh port. If not, is it firewall blocked? Is it not working properly? Misconfigured...

If you can't connect to it this way, you aren't going to get any further than this.

I feel like an idiot.

10.4.10 fixed the problem. (delete)
