I used to know an Apple hot key that you pushed an everything (all applications) would hide. Does anyone know that one? I am not talking about where the all move up or to the top left (they kind of get shaded).

Uh, option-cmd-h maybe? That hides everything except the active app.

If find that key combo too cumbersome, so I changed it to F8.
cmd-shift-] and cmd-shift-[ for switching tabs is helpful.
cmd-up arrow in the Finder goes to the parent folder.
cmd-opt-= to zoom in, cmd-opt-- to zoom out.
cmd-del to trash a file.
cmd-, for preferences

ctl+shift+cmd+4 grab part of a screen in clipboard so you can paste it instantly on to whatever application you want. (works really well with mail)
alt+cmd+w close all open windows. Worls with every application. Especially helpful in finder, photoshop

do these hot keys come standard with the computer? I am going to get quicksilver anyway, but I am very curious if these are already pre-installed. If they are how would I change them around?( obviously I am new to macs, should be getting my first one in a few days or so)

apple+alt+ctrl+eject -> shuts down the computer
apple+alt+eject -> puts computer to sleep
F9 -> uses Expose to see everything you have open and select exactly which program you want
F10 -> does the same as F9 but for several windows opened within a program
ctrl+w -> closes the current window from any program

Most of these are default commands, either system-wide, or application specific (for instance, ctrl+command+d is a Safari hotkey, command+option+eject is system-wide). The system-wide shortcuts can be changed in the System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts pane, and most applications will have their shortcuts edited in the preferences pane in (Name of Application) -> Preferences (i.e. Safari -> Preferences). Alternatively, you can hit Command+comma to access preferences for the application you're in.
I highly recommend Quicksilver - after a few days of getting used to hit, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. A great place to start is LifeHacker.com's Beginner's Guide to Quicksilver.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the hot key is that hides every application? I am not looking for the one that moves them to the (left, right,up,down) and has the shadow. I want them to be completely hidden. I used to know it.

Well, ⌘H hides the foreground app, and ⌘-option-H hides background apps. It's interesting - I no longer use app hiding. I used to use it often in OS 9. I guess it's because of Expose.

Cmd-Ctrl-D is system-wide. It's just that it only affects Cocoa apps, which is why it works in Safari and not FireFox.

I have a little question about the Apple-H command and minimize, kinda. I use Apple-H all the time. Those who use Expose all the time - do you just never minimize or Apple-H your apps? Do you just have everything open all the time? Expose isn't my friend becuase I'm an Apple-H'er. I want to understand the anti Apple-H'ers.

There isn't one. At least one app must be visible at all times.
However, if you cmd-opt-click on an app in the Dock without any open documents (like QT Player or Preview), it will hide every app while switching to that windowless app.
Sadly, this doesn't work with the Finder, because the Finder will automatically open a new window if none are showing. But if you cmd-opt-click on the Desktop (while no Finder windows are open), it does work.

I know this is an old post, but the feature you're asking for is "Show Desktop" in Exposé. You set it yourself in System Preferences -> Exposé.

So I have been using the hide function a lot lately. I am experiencing some weird problems. When I push
apple+option+h it hides the background apps
then when i push
apple+h it will NOT hide the active app
i have ensured that i have an active app by clicking it several times but the hide still does not work.

That's by design. There must always be at least one visible app, so the last one that has not yet been hidden can't be hidden any more.

And cmd delete just sends it to the trash. I remember hacking my version of the Mac OS in ResEdit to make this possible. Then Apple implemented it.
I often hack the F-keys in applications and such.

Quicksilver is an app that either you A. Love and use constanly, or B. have no use for.
Depending on how you do your computing. I've downloaded every version of QS and it simply doesn't help MY computer experience in any way. Being a graphics person my fingers are on the mouse most of the time, and most all my apps are running 24/7 because they are in constant use. While I know QS is more than an application launcher, the other things it does I either have a native OS X alternative, or a single 3rd party application that already does it with less CPU/RAM intensive requirements.
Having said that, If I was a laptop user that didn't like using a mouse or a trackpad, QS is awesome. And if I had a PB i'd probably get it.

I've always found that kind've annoying as I prefer to hide and tab between apps (I therefore can't hide them all for desktop access), I know I can easily use exposé, but what's the reasoning behind not hiding all the apps? Why must there always be one visible app?

Because then there would be no interface on screen, no menubar, no nothing — the computer would appear broken.

Has anyone in here ever gotten the page up/page down hot keys to work? Back when I had my laptop it never worked, and now that I have the new wireless keyboard it still doesn't work.

What would make them "hot keys"? They are simply supposed to scroll one page up or down, which they do.

Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
Page Up or Control-Up Arrow | Move up one page
Secondly, look at what the arrow keys say:
Command up/down have always just done Home/end for me on either keyboard, and the side arrows are useless.

fn + control + arrow? Because I've tried just fn + any arrow a million times. No dice.
Edit: Hmmm... control + up or down are working on my Power Mac at work to page up or down -- but only if I've tabbed into a text box on the page, which is kind of annoying and useless if a page has none.
Edit 2: Option + up or down are paging up or down on my Power Mac regardless of whether I'm tabbed into a text box or not. My head hurts... and I swear this didn't work on my wireless truncated keyboard at home last night, as I was trying any modifier.

Good point, although the menu bar could still be populated by the last hidden app (akin to showing the desktop with expose), or it could default back to Finder? I can understand why that hasn't been implemented though, tah.
