I'm looking to buy a new macbook pro but am also concious of the new OS release in October. Like last time (?) I assume that hardware bought within X months of the release will qualify for a free upgrade? Does anyone have any information on this or whether it will actually happen. Not sure I can wait until Oct to buy my laptop.....

Only hardware bought after the release date for Leopard has been announced will qualify for a free* update.

oh hold on i read your post again. so given that the apple.com website says it will be released in October this year, does this constitute them "announcing the Leopard release date"?

Announcing and releasing are two different things, besides if you need a macbook pro now buy it now and not worry about leopard. I don't think apple is going to give away (or at least sell at a reduced price) leopard for every mac sale from April (when they announced the revised release date) to October.

The cost of leopard is relatively insignificant to the total cost of a MacBook pro. Buy it now, enjoy it now and not worry about when Leopard is out.

No.

When they say that Leopard will ship on October xx, 2007. That counts as "announcing the release date."

If you NEED a MacBook Pro now, then buy it now. If you only WANT the MacBook Pro, then either wait, or get it now if you can't. The current MacBook Pro is a great machine, even with Tiger. I have one.

So if they say Leopard will ship on October xx, 2007 on September 15, 2007, and I buy a macbook on September 16, 2007 would I qualify for a free leopard upgrade?

Am I right? This is what I understand from your reply.

The usual grace period is two weeks. If you need a ProBook now, then buy it now.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

If you wait until October to buy your MB Pro, then you might feel like holding off further until the winter when the release the next wave of MB Pros.

There will always be something holding you back.

True.

If you wait six months, that's an ENTIRE GENERATION. You can always wait another six months if you feel like you're going to be missing something.

And another.

And another.

And another.
