Hey,
I asked this question
here a few days ago, but nobody was able to help. I figured I'd have more luck in this corner of the forum, maybe. I'm helping someone with a POS (Point-of-sale) system they bought second-hand, and it includes some serial peripherals with USB-to-serial adaptors.
In particular, I have a serial (RS-232) Star TSP600 printer that I'm trying to get to work in OS X. The company releases CUPS drivers, but these drivers supposedly do not support serial printers on Mac OS X. I'm guessing it's because serial printers are generally unsupported in OS X, though, and if I do some CUPS magic I can probably get it to work anyway.
I downloaded the CUPS Serial Print Enabler
here, and CUPS does see my USB to serial interface. And the hardware test page from the printer (no driver required) lists its port speed as 9600-8-N-1 with DTR handshaking. But when I enter all this into CUPS, no luck.
Has anyone here done this before, and can you give me some insight as to what I'm doing wrong? This was supposedly bought from someone who had all this hardware working under OS X so I'm sure I'm just missing something somewhere....
Also, can anyone with experience with POS systems tell me whether my receipt printer would show up as a normal printer under OS X, or whether it would only be visible to the POS software? I've been assuming that I need to get the printer to work as a regular printer under OS X, but I may be mistaken....
