Ok, So i just a new 2.4ghz Core2Duo 15"MBP..
And im tryin to Transfer my Data across from my 2.16ghz CoreDuo MBP... Running 10.4.10 and all the latest updates

I have used DiskUtility, and used restore, and used my Old computer (2.16ghz CD) as the Source and the New comp (2.4 C2D) as the destination.. That went all fine.. But when i restart i get Kernal Panics...

I thought it might be something to do with the new "Macbook Pro Software Update" thing that was seeded recently.. But the installer is REALLY fussy.. so i couldnt install it on the new comp

Anyway.. So now im reinstalling the System from the CDs on the new comp..

I really just wanted to copy my whole hard drive accross so i can keep going as i left off on my old MBP without having to install programs and settings extras etc etc.....

So im assuming the system data on the old macbookpro is incompatible on the new one??

I have heard horror stories of people using migration assistant.. and i really didnt want to use it..

If i use Migration Assistant.. is there anything that it doesn't copy?

Will i have problems with permissions? or anything of the like?

Is it possible to manually copy over my home folder instead..?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

EDIT ok found a similar Thread.. http://forums.macnn.com/69/macbook-p...ystem-mbp-c2d/

Suggestion: use the Migration Assistant. It's easy, and it did 99% of what I needed. I can't even remember what it didn't migrate. I think some folder I'd created in the root, maybe /fink. Whatever it was, it was simple to copy that little bit over by hand.

1. Reinstall OS X.

2. Use Migration Assistant, it will move all of your stuff over.

BTW, what horror stories have you heard? I've used it plenty of times and it never fails.

You can't use the old MBP's OS X with the new MBP (different builds) so it's no surprise your restore didn't work. Use MA instead.

The MA issues people where reporting happened when MA was used to migrate from PPC->Intel. I have used MA countless times to go from PPC->PPC or from Intel->Intel and it has worked just fine every time. The worst thing that's happened is that I had to reinstall a .kext file that somehow wasn't copied over. No big deal.

• Install a fresh version of OS X on the new MBP.
• Use MA to copy over your stuff from the old MBP.
• Done.

Considering that 10.4.10 came out after the Santa Rosa MBP did, you should be able to clone from an older CD MBP to a SR MBP with no problems provided your source is running 10.4.10. So, it should have worked unless Apple made some changes and is putting on a newer build of 10.4.10 on the most current SR MBPs.
