Hi All,
On both of my Macs, the standard OSX interface sounds have disappeared (e.g. trash sound, "copy finished" sound, and the "new mail" sound in Mail).
Both machines are running OSX 10.4.10 (a dual G5 2.0GHz and a MacBook Pro 15" LED).
I actually depend on the "copy finished" and "new mail" sounds quite a bit, and not having them is a problem.
Anybody else have this problem, and anyone know how to fix it? (fixing permissions isn't the answer).
fyi: I've been into System Prefs on both machines and have checked, unchecked and then re-checked "Play user interface sound effects" check box (oh, and the New Mail Sound checkbox in Mail too).
Thanks in advance for any help,
Chas

1. Open GarageBand
2. Close GarageBand
3. Do a search next time.
(Kidding 'bout #3. I'm not one of "Them")
Somehow your settings got tweaked. For some reason, running GarageBand fixes it. Known issue. You really can search to find out the particulars, if you care.

mea culpa! I usually am quite diligent in doing a search, but this time I only scanned the first two pages of the forum ('cause I figured it was some sort of 10.4.10 problem, and thus would be all over the place! Since it wasn't, I figured it was just me...and both of my Macs <doh!>)
Ok, I've never opened GarageBand before ("d*ammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a musician!"). I had to actually open it from a backup, as I've deleted it from both machines.
Unfortunately, no joy: I opened it on both computers, played a few notes on the default grand piano, and then closed it. Still no system sounds (should I do something else in GarageBand? Time to do a real search...)
Thanks for your help,
Chas

Try the Audio Midi Setup utility. Check the rate in the audio output format. It should be 44100 Hz.

Hi Curiosity,
Found the utility. It was already set to a sampling rate of 44100 Hz. I changed it to the DAT rate, quit, and then opened up again and changed it back. Still no luck!
This is a really strange problem (especially as I've never opened up GarageBand before, maybe I'm being punished for that?? ;-)
btw: a search here in the forums has only found references to deleting com.apple.finder.plist, and very little to do with GarageBand to fix the problem. What terms are people searching?
Chas

Hi All,
I installed some new firmware on my sound-less MBP, and it brought my system sounds back (yay!).
No such luck on the G5 though (funny it took a firmware update to fix a system software issue).
Chas
ps. quicktime movies have no sound on the afflicted machine either (they had no sound on the MBP before the firmware update too). They play find with other players.
