I got a warning from OS X today that my 150GB Raptor drive (which is my boot drive) is full which I found a bit weird. Upon checking different files and folders, the console.log file located in /Library/Logs/Console was taking up almost 56GB. I moved it to Trash but when I try to empty trash, it says the file is in use.

What is the world is using this file and how can I prevent a log file growing to 56GB??

Did you take a look at the file? Obviously something is writing a whole lot of stuff to it. Check out what that something is.

Also, the weekly maintenance script should rotate the console logfile. Did it run? Did it rotate the logfile?

I'm not much of a Mac Guru- I simply moved the file to trash can and restarted the Mac. Volia- now I have over 70GB free!

How do you know it won't fill up again quickly? And what about the performance hit?
