My volume appears to be locked and won't turn up or down.

I don't know how it happened, but when I have headphones in the jack the volume control works, but when trying to play the sound out of the built in speakers, I get this:

I also have a red led emitting from the headphone jack.

Thanks in advance.

That happens when your Mac is connected to a digital output or thinks it still is. Try putting your Mac to sleep and waking it up or rebooting.

Thanks Art, I closed the lid on my macbook, opened it, and pulled the pin out of the headphone jack while it was waking up, it works now.

I've found that when the Mac gets confused and thinks it's using the optical out, it can help to go into the System Preferences --> Sound and mess around with the Output settings a bit, and/or open up /Applications/Utilities/Audio-MIDI Setup and select the analog output there.

If I go to the Sound pane on System Preferences or the MIDI sound preferences, it does not recognize the built in speakers.

Any suggestions?
